Sarawak Week launches at Expo 2025 Osaka

OSAKA, JAPAN, 9 August 2025 - Sarawak officially launched its much-anticipated Sarawak Week: The Grand Showcase at the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka here yesterday. The event was officiated by Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who represented the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.
In his keynote remarks delivered by Awang Tengah, the Premier highlighted Japan’s role as one of Sarawak’s top trading partners, with RM31.6 billion in trade recorded in 2024. Japanese investments in Sarawak’s manufacturing sector have reached RM13.8 billion since 2011 and generated over 4,000 jobs. These figures reflect deep trust and shared progress, he said.
“Japan has long been a friend and partner to Sarawak, and today, we reaffirm that bond with renewed purpose and vision,” he said.
The Premier also highlighted the region’s alignment with global sustainability goals, saying Sarawak is not just participating, but shaping the green economy.
“From hydrogen energy to bamboo innovation, Sarawak is ready to lead,” he said.
Reflecting on the Malaysia–Japan relationship, the Premier added: “For 67 years, Malaysia and Japan have walked side by side. Through the Look East Policy and now the Asia Zero Emission Community, we are entering a new chapter defined by innovation, resilience, and mutual respect.”
Sarawak Week was officially launched with a ribbon cutting ceremony officiated by Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED), his deputy, Datuk Dr. Malcolm Mussen Ak Lamoh, along with Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

This was followed by a signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Invest Sarawak Sdn. Bhd. and OCI Tokuyama Semiconductor Materials Sdn. Bhd., as well as five Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) respectively, between Sarawak Energy Berhad and Nippon Koei Co. Ltd., Sumitoma Corporation Asia & Oceania as well as Shimizu Corporation; Aramaz Borneo (SMM2H) Sdn. Bhd. and Frontier Co. Ltd; Dong Ma (SMM2H) Sdn. Bhd. and Kiyuu Co. Ltd.; Borneo Escape (SMM2H) Sdn. Bhd. and N’s Co. Ltd.; as well as Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn. Bhd.
Running from Aug 4 to 10, Sarawak Week has been a big hit with visitors at the Malaysia Pavilion, here at Expo 2025 Osaka. The Sarawak showcase features digital exhibitions, cultural performances, pocket talks on investment and tourism, and Kristy AI (Sarawak’s multilingual smart ambassador) among others.
