Where Classical Meets Jazz: A Memorable Night of Music in Kuching

KUCHING, 12 August 2026: Music lovers were treated to an inspiring evening of classical and jazz music at A Jazzy Night of Classics (From Baroque to Bolling), held on 9 August 2026 at 7pm,Function Room 2, 9th Floor, Crown Tower, Kuching.

The concert marked the culmination of an international music collaboration and professional development programme aimed at strengthening orchestral excellence and nurturing musical talent in Sarawak.

Organised by Persatuan Muzik, Tarian dan Seni Kuching in collaboration with Simfoni Orkestra Negeri Sarawak (SONS) and IMH Classic Ensemble, the programme provided members of SONS and the wider music community with valuable opportunities to learn and develop their skills through masterclasses, workshops, rehearsals and performance collaborations.

The initiative brought together distinguished musicians and educators from the United States, Denmark, the Philippines and Sarawak, including American flutist, woodwind specialist and conductor Kenneth Chia; Danish oboist, arranger and former Singapore Symphony Orchestra musician Joost Flach; Filipino guitarist and conductor Reginald Bernaldez; drummer, guitarist and conductor Mark Maloney; pianist and music educator Kristene Alcances; and SONS Conductor Desmind Tie from Sarawak.

The concert featured a captivating repertoire spanning different musical eras, with works by renowned composers including Vivaldi, Mozart, Holst, Karl Jenkins and Claude Bolling. The programme created a unique meeting point between the refinement of classical music and the expressive character of jazz.

A special highlight of the evening was the participation of young musicians, who had the opportunity to perform alongside experienced artists and conductors. Through the programme, emerging musicians gained valuable practical experience while building confidence and developing their musical abilities.

The initiative also reflected the continued commitment of music educators and arts advocates, including Dr. Geraldine Law-Lee, towards advancing music education and the performing arts in Sarawak.

Among the distinguished guests were MSS CEO Dr. Suffian bin Haji Jalet and Deputy CEO Encik Awang Ikman bin Awang Sepian, together with MSS VIPs and staff, musicians, educators, parents and music enthusiasts.

More than a night of music, A Jazzy Night of Classics demonstrated the power of collaboration in connecting cultures, generations and musical traditions. From Baroque masterpieces to jazz-inspired compositions, the concert celebrated the achievements of Sarawak's musicians while creating meaningful opportunities for learning and artistic growth.

As international artists, educators and local musicians shared the stage, the evening offered a glimpse into the potential of Sarawak's growing music scene where classical traditions and contemporary influences can come together to create something truly memorable.
