Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project proceeds to next phase

SINGAPORE, 17 October 2025: The Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection secured a Conditional Approval (CA) from the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) earlier today, a significant milestone towards improving broader energy security prospects and enhancing economic integration between neighbouring nations in the spirit of ASEAN.
With the issuance of the CA, the Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project is recognised to have been preliminary assessed to be technically and commercially viable and ready to move on to the next phase of obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals and licenses for further development of the project. The CA granted by EMA is to a Consortium comprising Sarawak Energy and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, which will export around 1GW of renewable energy from Sarawak to Singapore, with flow expected to commence around 2035 or earlier.
The handing over ceremony today saw EMA Assistant Chief Executive & Chief Commercial Officer, Eugene Toh presenting the Letter of Conditional Approval to the Chairman of Sarawak Energy and Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy & PETROS) Sarawak, Datuk Haji Ibrahim Haji Baki and Group Chief Executive Officer of Sembcorp Industries Ltd, Wong Kim Yin.
The ceremony was witnessed by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, Gan Kim Yong and the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg. Also present were Ministry for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi, Sarawak State Secretary and Sarawak Energy Board Member, Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Energy Board Member, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Chief Operating Officer of Sarawak Energy Resources and Singapore Interconnection Project Lead, Alvin Lim and Sarawak Energy Senior Vice President of Corporate Services, Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan.

“Sarawak is pleased with this positive development on the Sarawak-Singapore Project, which offers significant value in supporting Malaysia’s pursuit of the development and operation of a wider ASEAN Power Grid. Sarawak is also supporting the development of the Borneo Grid, having established a cross-border connection with West Kalimantan, Indonesia in 2016. Building on this success, we are now working to establish new interconnections with Sabah and Brunei Darussalam to cater to regional energy needs,” said the Premier of Sarawak.
“Multiple interconnections with abundant renewable energy resources, presents an excellent opportunity to initiate multilateral energy trading. Sarawak Energy is committed to respectfully collaborate and work with partners across Borneo and the broader ASEAN community to pursue and advocate the development of interconnections with the common objectives on achieving energy security, shared prosperity and delivering energy transition targets,” shared Datuk Haji Ibrahim.
