Sarawak secures 2 gold, 3 bronze medals ahead of SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026

SELANGOR, 15 August 2026: The fight is on for the Sarawak contingent, who are currently competing to retain the state’s championship title at the 22nd edition of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA XXII), which is happening in Selangor until August 24, 2026.

The Sarawak contingent officially earned its first gold medals earlier today, thanks to Taekwondo duo, Allexandre Axcell Juntan and Mohamad Zulhafiz. During the Kyorogi Men’s -63KG, Allexandre defeated Federal Territories’ Thiban Raj, while Zulhafiz beat out Ng Kar Weng from the Federal Territories during the finals of the Kyorogi Men’s -87KG less than half an hour later. The day before, the Taekwondo team also saw a bronze performance from Martha Evyanna in the Kyorogi Women’s -46KG, who shared the podium with fellow bronze medalist Kavyishaa a/p Vijayakumar from Kedah.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Rhythmic Gymnastics team, Shirley Chia, Clarissa Makena Ambok, Eliza Toh and Nichelle Kung secured Sarawak’s first ever medal for this edition of SUKMA XXII, a historic win for the state, who last won a medal in the sport 20 years ago. The Sarawak team amassed a total of 170.950 for the bronze medal, losing out to Selangor (214.350) and Federal Territories (227.050) for silver and gold medals respectively.

Also making history at SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026 is the state’s Beach Volleyball Women’s Doubles team, Stacy Usun Yesayah and Jacqueline Yek, who secured Sarawak’s first ever medal in the sports category. During the medal match today, the duo faced off against Perak A’s Jing Shi and Cheah Jing Wen in 2 intense rounds, securing their victory by dominating both with scores 21-12 and 21-13.

Unfortunately, Sarawak’s Men’s Football Team will be coming home earlier than expected, after they were eliminated from Group A earlier today. Despite beating Terengganu 3-2 earlier this afternoon, the team still ranked 3rd in the group behind Sabah, ending their hopes for a medal.

Another highlight from the Sarawak contingent is the Women’s Water Polo team, who is making waves as a main contender for the gold medal, after an impressive total of 4 consecutive wins, defeating Penang, Federal Territories, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. The fight for gold will be happening on August 17, where Sarawak will once again face Selangor, and is expected to be a close rematch, with only one goal separating the two teams in a previous match.
