Sarawak Performing Arts Centre to complete by June 2027

KUCHING, 2 March 2026: The Sarawak Performing Arts Centre is progressing ahead of schedule and is expected to complete renovations and upgrades by June 2027!
This was shared by Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during his first site visit, who also added that the project is currently at 29% completion.
The site, which was formerly the old State Legislative Assembly Building, will be able to seat around 600 people once completed, and is expected to function as Sarawak’s first ever dedicated performing arts venue. The RM247 million project will be equipped with modern, international-standard facilities to support arts, cultural and creative industry events in the state.
“The Theatre Hall, inspired by London’s Royal Albert Hall, will have a total of 412 seats on the 1st Floor, 180 seats on the 2nd Floor and 8 royal seats. The complex will also include a multi-purpose hall with 754 seats, a black box theatre with 124 seats, a visual art gallery, dance studio as well as a music studio,” added Abdul Karim.
Also present at the site visit were Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak Director, Datu Dr. Cassidy Morris, MTCP Permanent Secretary, Morshidi Fredrick, consultants, contractors and others.
