KUCHING, 8 September 2025 – Sarawak just received another good news, with the Sarawak Delta Geopark officially accepted as a UNESCO Global Geopark during the 10th Council Meeting held in Temuco, Chile.

The announcement came as a wonderful surprise as the Sarawak Delta Geopark delegation, led by the Director of Forests Sarawak, Datu Haji Hamden Bin Haji Mohammad, attends the 11th Global Geoparks Network Conference held in Temuco. This positions Sarawak as a key player in global geotourism and sustainable heritage conservation.

Hamden, in his Facebook post following the announcement, said, “Words cannot express the overwhelming joy and gratitude we feel today upon hearing the wonderful news from Chile – the Sarawak Delta Geopark has been officially accepted as a UNESCO Global Geopark!”

“This is truly a proud and historic moment for Sarawak, as it becomes the first Geopark from our State to be recognised at the international stage,” he added, saying that the achievement belongs to all Sarawakians.

“It inspires us to continue protecting and celebrating our natural wonders and cultural heritage for the world to see,” he concluded.

The Sarawak Delta Geopark spans over 311,000 hectares and showcases rich geological, biological, and cultural heritage, from the ancient Schist Tuang formations in Semeba to the biodiversity of Semenggoh Nature Reserve and the cultural vibrancy of the Sarawak Cultural Village.

The UNESCO designation is expected to boost eco-tourism, educational outreach, and community empowerment across the region. It also aligns with Sarawak’s broader goals of environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Delta Geopark delegation’s participation in the 11th Global Geoparks Network Conference in Temuco, Chile, not only strengthens international networking but is also a means to showcase the potential and uniqueness of the Sarawak Delta Geopark on the global stage.
