Russia Eyes Sarawak’s Rocket Launch Potential, Offers Aerospace Expertise

KUCHING, 27 October 2026 — Russia has expressed interest in sharing its aerospace expertise with Sarawak, including knowledge of rocket launch facilities, satellite manufacturing and technical training.
Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl M. Latypov said Sarawak has potential locations for a rocket launch centre, although developing such facilities would require supporting infrastructure, specialised expertise and a skilled workforce.
He shared the interest following a courtesy call on caretaker Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex in Kuching on 27 October.
Latypov said Russia was also open to collaborating with i-CATS University College in aerospace education and technical training, while exploring opportunities for Malaysian students to pursue further studies in Russia.
Beyond aerospace, discussions covered potential cooperation in agriculture, including rice cultivation technology, agricultural research and animal feed production. Latypov also highlighted opportunities to exchange expertise in veterinary science and improve agricultural productivity through collaborative research.
The proposed cooperation remains at the discussion stage, with further engagement needed to identify specific initiatives. If progressed, the partnership could create opportunities for Sarawak to strengthen its aerospace capabilities, develop local talent and expand international research collaboration.
