Kuching to host first Borneo Blockchain Conference

KUCHING, 10 September 2025 - Sarawak is set to host the very first Borneo Blockchain Conference (BBC) 2025 on Oct 9-10 at the Borneo Cultures Museum. This was announced earlier by Kuching Blockchain Technology Association (KBTA) president, James Gan, in a press conference held at Business Events Sarawak’s headquarters here.
Organised by KBTA, this inaugural gathering marks the first large-scale blockchain-focused conference ever held in Borneo, bringing together global experts, regional innovators, and local changemakers under one roof.

“This isn’t just another tech event. BBC 2025 is designed to align with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), where digital transformation and innovation are central pillars of growth,” James said when speaking at the press conference.
“Our Premier has made it clear: digital technologies are key to making Sarawak a high-income, advanced state by 2030, and blockchain has an important role to play in that journey,” he added.
The conference theme, “From Rainforest to Blockchain: Building a Greener, Smarter Borneo” reflects Sarawak’s unique identity as both a custodian of one of the world’s richest rainforests and a rising player in digital innovation.
“Just as our rainforest sustains life, blockchain can power the next generation of sustainable solutions, which brings trust, transparency, and efficiency to sectors such as supply chain management, renewable energy, financial inclusion, digital identity, and the creative economy,” James went on to say.

Supported by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS), UiTM Sarawak Campus, and HRDCORP, BBC 2025 is expected to attract over 300 delegates and feature 14 speakers from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Germany, the United Kingdom, and beyond.
The two-day programme will include concurrent sessions on blockchain policy, industry applications, and technical innovation; keynotes from government and industry leaders; panel discussions and workshops bridging regulation and business opportunities; and an exhibition hall spotlighting blockchain-driven startups and solutions.
Also speaking at the press conference, General Manager of SMA, Dato Dr. Anderson Tiong Ing Heng emphasised the importance of demystifying blockchain for the public.
“For many people, blockchain feels like a mystery. It sounds complicated, something only tech experts understand. But here’s the truth: blockchain is quite simple and it’s becoming a very important part of keeping us safe online,” he said.
“Think of blockchain like a notebook that everyone can see, but no one can erase or change. That’s why it’s called a chain of blocks,” he added, saying further that “Blockchain, when applied effectively, can strengthen governance, empower businesses, and benefit communities. For Sarawak, this is about unlocking opportunities that contribute to sustainable growth, economic resilience, and inclusivity.”
SMA’s role as a regulator and enabler of Sarawak’s digital landscape is central to the conference’s mission.
“Together with our partners, we aim to foster an ecosystem where innovation can thrive while maintaining strong governance, security, and public trust,” Anderson said.
BBC 2025 also aims to raise public awareness about cybersecurity and digital protection. Anderson explained that each day, we face threats like hacking, phishing, and online fraud. By learning about tools like blockchain, we give ourselves a stronger shield against these dangers and take one more step toward keeping our digital lives safe.
“Our goal is simple - to position Kuching as a regional hub for blockchain innovation, and to nurture Sarawak’s own talent our youth, entrepreneurs, and academics so they can play a bigger role in the global digital economy,” James concluded.
Also present at this afternoon’s press conference were CEO of TEGAS, Haji Udin bin Bujang; UiTM Sarawak Campus’s Head of School, Computer Science and Tourism Management, representing Rector UiTM Sarawak Campus, Ts. Dr. Lee Beng Yong; BESarawak’s Senior Business Development Executive, representing its CEO, Serena Sa-or; and SDEC’s Public Relations Executive, representing its CEO, Nur Hazwan bin Abdul Rhani.
Registration for BBC 2025 is now open via the official website. KBTA invites government agencies, businesses, students, and the public to be part of this event. For more details, visit https://www.borneoblockchain.com.
