KUCHING, 30 May 2025 – A book celebrating Sarawak’s century-old peace agreement was officially launched this morning. Titled ‘Commemorating a Century of Kapit Peacemaking (1924-2024)’, the book is jointly published by the Dayak Cultural Foundation and Tun Jugah Foundation. Officially launching the book was Minister of Public Works, Malaysia, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who is also Chairman of the 100th Anniversary of the Kapit Peacemaking Agreement.

Speaking at the launch event at the Dayak Cultural Foundation building along Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, the Minister emphasised how this historic agreement shaped the future of Sarawak.

“The Kapit Peace-Making of 1924 was a pivotal event that laid the foundation for lasting peace in Sarawak. It marked the end of inter- and intra-tribal warfare, forging a spirit of unity among the diverse ethnic communities,” he said.

“Today, Sarawak enjoys peace and stability, creating a conducive environment for development and progress. Our different ethnic groups now work together harmoniously, sharing power and respecting one another. This unity is the strength of our State, and it bodes well for Sarawak's future,” added Alexander.

The book captures the spirit of the 100th-anniversary celebration held last December. Readers will find cultural performances, exhibitions, international seminars, and traditional rituals brought to life through writings and photographs carried on its pages. Book editor, Dr Regina Garai stressed the importance of preserving such crucial moments.

“We wrote this book because the Kapit Peace-Making Agreement in 1924 is a significant milestone in Sarawak's history. It is crucial to document the events and activities surrounding this momentous occasion, or they risk being forgotten over time,” she explained.

“The 100th anniversary is especially meaningful, as none of those who took part in the original 1924 peace-making are with us today. And just as surely, none of us will be here to witness the 200th anniversary. By recording this history in the form of a book, we ensure that future generations can learn about, appreciate, and understand our efforts in commemorating this particularly important event,” Dr Regina added.

With 300 pages and eight chapters, the book was put together under tight deadlines. The editorial team worked tirelessly to complete it before Gawai 2025, compiling insights from both local and international scholars while maintaining strict historical accuracy. Dr Regina acknowledged the challenges but praised the team’s determination and passion.

“We are especially grateful to have Yang Berbahagia Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Leonard Linggi as our advisor. His guidance and constant encouragement have been invaluable throughout this journey,” she said when speaking at the launching ceremony.

Besides preserving history, the book also makes for an ideal educational resource for researchers, educators, and students eager to learn more about Sarawak’s past. Dr Regina hopes it will inspire future scholars and strengthen pride in the region’s heritage.

Also present at this morning's ceremony were Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication 1, Datuk Liwan Lagang; Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Native Law and Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat; and Managing Trustee of the Dayak Cultural Foundation, advisor of the Organising Committee for the 100th Anniversary of the Kapit Peacemaking Agreement 1924, and Chairman of the Editorial Committee, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Leonard Linggi Jugah.
