Sejingkat Bridge now open

KUCHING, 5 October 2026: The long-awaited Sejingkat Bridge, which connects Demak Laut in Kuching to Tanjung Bako in Samarahan, was officially opened today by Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, marking a significant milestone for the state’s road network.
Measuring at 1.281KM in length, with 200-metre-long approach roads on both sides, the opening of the Sejingkat Bridge marked the completion of Sarawak’s 12th mega bridge project, with another 4 expected to be ready within the last quarter of the year and the remainder completed in 2027.
“We are very proud to stand here today at the Sejingkat Bridge. Thanks to the excellent work of Jabatan Kerja Raya Sarawak and KACC Construction, we are able to open this bridge earlier than expected, despite some setbacks during the project,” said Uggah during the soft launching earlier today.

The Sejingkat Bridge is a four-lane dual carriageway built in accordance with Jabatan Kerja Raya’s R5 design standards, and is Sarawak’s first fully integral cable-stayed bridge and Malaysia’s first in-plane diamond-shaped concrete pylon – marking a truly remarkable engineering feat for the state. The bridge was also constructed with sustainability in mind, with 2,776 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) saved through sustainable material selection, or 4.3% in overall reduction in embodied carbon.
As part of the Kuching-Samarahan Second Trunk Road, the bridge is set to significantly improve congestion along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway and shorten travel time between Kota Samarahan and the Sejingkat and Demak Laut Industrial Area, cutting the travel distance down from 29KM to 16.5KM. Over 20,000 vehicles are expected to cross the Sejingkat Bridge in a single day.

Fully funded by the Sarawak State Government at the cost of RM365.74 million, the Sejingkat Bridge is set to not only ease traffic demands and strengthen communities along the Second Trunk Road, but support local socioeconomic development and open up new commercial and industrial zones, enhancing greater connectivity between Kuching and Samarahan.
“Once the 296KM stretch of the Second Trunk Road connecting Kota Samarahan, Sebuyau, Sadong Jaya and Sri Aman is operational, it will reduce the travel distance between Kuching and Sri Aman by 156KM. The Second Trunk Road between Sri Aman and Betong will feature a 11KM elevated highway over peatlands,” the Deputy Premier said, adding that the last mile of the project would be the upgrading of approximately 5,700KM of former logging roads, ensuring that all remote villages within the state is linked by access roads by 2030.
Also present at today’s soft launching, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development I (Infrastructure Development), Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak, Datuk Dr. Haji Hazland bin Haji Abang Hipni and Director of JKR Sarawak, Dr. Cassidy ak Morris.
