SEDC celebrates 53 years of legacy and growth

KUCHING, 6 December 2025 - Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) hosted its Appreciation Night 2025 at Riverside Majestic Hotel's Puteri Wing here last night to celebrate its 53rd anniversary, having first opened its doors in 1972.

The event, titled "53 Years of Legacy, Innovation, Growth & Sustainability," was an evening dedicated to corporate milestones, as well as the people and partners who breathe life into Sarawak’s development.

Among the highlights was the honouring the people who share the news. A special thank you was given to 16 media partners for their important role. They were recognised for helping SEDC tell its story, share community news, and highlight how the State’s development is progressing.

The biggest moment was the award given to the State leader, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg. He received the highest honour, the "Recognition of Visionary Excellence."

SEDC Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Haji Abdul Aziz Bin Dato Haji Husain, said this award was given to honour the Premier’s bold ideas and strong guidance. He added that this leadership has helped make Sarawak’s economy stronger and brought wealth to the people.

He also reflected on SEDC’s history, stating, “SEDC's 53-year journey is proof of our resilience, willingness to change, and commitment to serving the people of Sarawak.”

In his speech, the Premier showed his vision for the future, especially for tourism. He announced plans to upgrade the road to Damai, making it bigger and better.

“With improved infrastructure, the mobility will be improved between Kuching to Damai,” he said, confirming that the project includes making the road four lanes wide and building a new bridge at Santubong.

He also spoke about making the Damai Golf Course world-class, hoping to draw international players. “Though I'm not a golfer,” he joked, saying further that: “We will try to attract golfers from other countries to play golf at Damai.”

The Premier also highlighted the future road to Mulu, which will make travel easier for tourists, thereby attracting more visitors.

“In other words, we have another loop that will be an attraction to tourists, convenient for tourists to go to Mulu,” he explained.

The dinner also celebrated success within the SEDC family, with awards presented to three outstanding companies:

  • Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) won "Most Outstanding Investee Company" for its excellent work in showcasing Sarawak’s culture globally.

  • SEDC Resources Sdn Bhd won "Company of the Year" for its strong financial results and focus on environment-friendly practices.

  • Rosewood Station Pty Ltd won "Inspiring Global Presence" for growing its business overseas and putting Sarawak on the international stage.

The night included performances by famous local singers including Melissa Francis and Bob Yusuf. A special appearance by Hafiz Suip had guests screaming in excitement.
