Sarawak Science Centre officially opens

KUCHING, 30 July 2026: The newly launched Sarawak Science Centre Interactive Experience (SSCiEX) is set to be a global hub for scientific collaboration and a living classroom where students can experience science beyond textbooks, preparing young Sarawakians for future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Located along Jalan Stadium in Kuching, between Wisma SESCO and Wisma Sumber Alam, the SSCiEX is Sarawak’s first large-scale interactive centre, located within a 10.97-acre site with a 5-storey main building. Members of the public are welcome to explore a total of 22 thematic galleries featuring over 200 interactive exhibits on physics, engineering, earth science, biology and technology, as well as an animatronic dinosaur gallery, a water play zone, a mirror maze, hands-on exhibits on forces, light and sound and daily science shows in the theatre. Other facilities include a 2 Maker Spaces, 5 specialised labs, community farming zones and an on-site hostel for school groups.
SSCiEX was launched yesterday afternoon by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg, who noted the important role the centre will play in nurturing a new generation of science-savvy youths to support the state’s hydrogen economy and address global challenges.
“With the establishment of this science centre, we want the youths to be curious with what the world is about, particularly now as we face the effects of climate change. The next thing is for them to study and analyse, which is why we have the common lab and laboratory here,” said the Premier in his officiating speech, adding that the facility is a strategic investment in human capital development aimed at cultivating curiosity and scientific thinking among young Sarawakians, in line with the state’s long-term vision beyond 2030.
In his speech, the Premier also calls for scientific collaboration between scientists, researchers, research institutions from around the world and Sarawak through SSCiEX, to explore innovative solutions for the future of Sarawak, Malaysia and the international community.
“This centre is a welcoming space where curiosity is encouraged, support is provided for both educators and learners and the enrichment of science is discovered. With greater interest in STEM subjects, SSCiEX will connect young Sarawakians with opportunities in robotics, coding, biotechnology and renewable energy, preparing them for the jobs of tomorrow,” highlighted the Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee in his opening address.
According to Sagah, the facility reflects the 3 pillars of economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability, which will not only ensure that science is accessible to communities across Sarawak, but also promote much-needed awareness for green technology.
Also in attendance at yesterday’s launching ceremony, Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah and Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki, General Manager of the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) and SSCiEX Managing Director, Ts. Dr. Peter Morin Nissom, Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah and Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development I, Datuk Dr. Annuar Rapaee.
The Sarawak Science Centre Interactive Experience (SSCiEX) is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday from 9AM to 4.30PM. Admission is currently free, with ticket prices to be announced at a later date. SSCiEX will be closed for scheduled maintenance from August 1 to 3, and will resume operations from August 4 onwards.
