PMX, Michelle Yeoh launch I LITE U project as Visit Malaysia 2026 kicks off

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 January 2026 – A sea of spectators packed Bukit Bintang on Jan 3 to witness the launch of the "I LITE U" project that saw Malaysia announcing to the world: we're ready to shine. Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim led the launch at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Bintang here, joined by Oscar-winning actress, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh; Federal Territories Minister, Hannah Yeoh; Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing; Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming; and KL Mayor, Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud.

I LITE U stands for Infrastructure, Lighting, Innovation, Technology and Eco-Sustainability towards Urbanisation. The project transforms a one-kilometre stretch of Bukit Bintang with sustainable LED lights, which creates a glowing showcase for Visit Malaysia 2026.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, the Prime Minister said: “Our tourism success is built on peace and unity. Every race, every state, every community plays a role in shaping Malaysia's story.”

The Bukit Bintang installation features over 70 energy-efficient LED displays. This effort supports environmental goals while attracting tourists at the same time. The I LITE U concept will expand to other major cities in Malaysia including Ipoh in Perak, George Town in Penang, Johor Bahru in Johor, and Melaka. This will create a network of illuminated urban spaces that balance beauty with environmental responsibility. The project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 and Kuala Lumpur's aim of becoming a low-carbon city.

Meanwhile, Visit Malaysia 2026 aims to bring 43 million international visitors and generate RM76 billion in tourism revenue. It’s an ambitious target but one that signals Malaysia's confidence in its tourism appeal. VM2026, as Michelle Yeoh said, is an invitation to experience the country’s diversity, warmth, culinary symphony, and vibrant arts.
