New life for Kuching Civic Centre
The Kuching Civic Centre officially reopens to the public today.

KUCHING, 13 July 2026: Once a community hub full of life, the Kuching Civic Centre located along Jalan Taman Budaya officially reopens its doors to the public from today, after being closed for months following restoration and renovation works.

According by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, the Kuching Civic Centre is now open to the public for community activities, recreational spaces and food stalls, marking the return of one of Kuching’s most iconic buildings.

Open since 1988, the Kuching Civic Centre was once frequented by locals for recreational activities like dancing and aerobics as well as community-based programmes and exhibitions like the Petrosains DinoTrek2. However, following an incident where part of the roof was blown off due to strong winds, the centre was closed to the publics for extensive repairs to the main tower’s roof and other renovations, as part of the first phase of its restoration.

Now, members of the public can frequent the spacious grounds of the Civic Centre freely and pay a visit to one of 8 food stalls located below what was once the planetarium and library. However, the elevators and the top of the observation tower are still closed, with plans to open a rooftop restaurant slated for the 2nd phase of restoration.
