Malaysia Day 2026 Exhibition Brings The Nation’s History To Life In Kuching
KUCHING, September 14, 2026: The story of how Malaysia came to be is taking centre stage in Kuching this Malaysia Day season, with the Malaysia Day 2026 National Celebration Exhibition inviting visitors to step back in time and explore the milestones, documents and personalities behind the formation of the nation.
Held at the Main Atrium of Plaza Merdeka from September 10 to 16, the exhibition was officially launched today by Communications Minister Dato’ Seri Fahmi Fadzil and Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Carrying the theme “Corridor of the Era of Malaysia’s Formation”, the exhibition is organised by the Information Department of Malaysia (JAPEN), through JAPEN Sarawak, as part of this year’s Malaysia Day national celebration.
Rather than simply presenting history through dates and facts, the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to trace the journey towards the formation of Malaysia through five main sections covering the Malaysia Formation Timeline, documents related to the formation of Malaysia, the committees and commissions involved in the process, a gallery honouring key figures, and a Nationhood Gallery exploring the evolution of Malaysia’s national identity.
Visitors can also expect a more interactive experience, with activities such as nationhood quizzes, Kahoot! games, Pocket Talks and creative photography competitions adding a contemporary touch to the historical displays. Cultural performances by PENTARAMA and demonstrations on document preservation further bring different aspects of Malaysia’s history and heritage closer to the public.
The exhibition is part of a wider effort to encourage Malaysians, particularly younger generations, to better understand the journey behind the formation of the country and appreciate the spirit of cooperation and unity that shaped its history.
Its reach also extends beyond Kuching, with mini exhibitions being held across 10 divisions in Sarawak, alongside selected locations in Sabah and Putrajaya during the same period. Through these initiatives, more communities will have the opportunity to explore Malaysia’s history and reflect on the values of togetherness that continue to form the foundation of the nation.
The exhibition also aligns with the 2026 National Month and Malaysia Day celebration theme, “Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati”, reinforcing the importance of unity, mutual understanding and shared prosperity.
With Malaysia Day falling on September 16, the exhibition serves as a timely reminder that the nation’s story is more than just a chapter in history books. It is a story shaped by people, shared aspirations and collective decisions — a journey that continues to influence Malaysia today.
