KUCHING, 1 July 2026: The Sarawak Arts Council, better known as Majlis Seni Sarawak (MSS), recently held its first ever media engagement event, Majlis Seni Sarawak Bersama Media’ yesterday afternoon at the Theatre Hotel in Kuching. Graced by the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the event was held to foster closer relationships between MSS and media practitioners from all over Kuching, including BorneoTalk, The Borneo Post, TVS, Cats FM, Astro Awani, Sarawak Tribune and more. 

“As we all know, the media is more than a vessel that disseminates information to the masses but are key partners in shaping the perception of the people, increasing public awareness and promoting artistic values as well as Sarawak’s own creative industry,” stated newly appointed MSS Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Suffian bin Haji Jalet in his welcoming address.

“In the era of fast-paced communication, the media plays a vital role in the development of the creative economy through coverage of arts-based events like festivals, cultural performances and handicraft bazaars. Through consistent and high-quality media coverage, whether digital or print, we are confident in elevating and advancing Sarawak’s creative industries and arts initiatives to a wider audience, both locally and internationally,” he added.


During the event, Dr. Suffian also shared various improvements made within MSS since taking over as CEO back in April 2026, including restructuring operations and functions. He also shared major programmes being organised throughout the year, including open days, classes, the upcoming 36th edition of Festival Tari & Lagu Melayu Asli and Ngelakar Seni forum. 


Meanwhile, in his launching speech, Dato Sri Abdul Karim shared that Rumah Sarawak, a heritage building located near Jalan Taman Budaya, will serve as MSS’ new headquarters, and is set to be transformed into a hub of arts and culture, ensuring a tranquil space for artists, dancers and musicians to draw inspiration from.

“Sarawak is being increasingly active in promoting our local arts and culture, especially to international audiences. Through collaborations with Malaysian embassies and High Commissions abroad, we have showcased our talented dancers, singers, musicians, artisans and even chefs on the global stage,” he said, adding that MSS plays a crucial role in advancing Sarawak’s arts and culture. 


Yesterday’s event also saw the unveiling of MSS’ new logo, MSS’ very own 2026 Calendar of Events booklet as well as a CD of traditional music.
