Layar Cycling Carnival back for 7th edition

KUCHING, 30 May 2025: The annual Layar Cycling Carnival is back for its 7th edition, and is taking place August 29 to 31, 2025 in Betong, as announced by Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu earlier today during a press conference in Petra Jaya, Kuching.
Organised by Saberkas Layar and the Department of Public Works Betong, the cycling event is aimed at finding fresh talents in the sport as well as promoting the surroundings of Layar as a sports tourism destination. First introduced in 2017 with only 97 contestants, the Layar Cycling Carnival now attracts hundreds of local as well as international cyclists, like 337 cyclists joining last year.
According to Dato Gerald, the carnival will feature national-level teams, amateur riders as well as teams from West Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, who will be conquering the Ulu Layar/Paku route, a 102KM route imbued with tough hill ascends. Teams expected to join LLC2025 include TSG Cycling Academic, Trengganu, Amigos Suci Brunei, Anak Brunei Cycling Team, RPM (Indonesia), SSC Development Team, Sonamu (Sarawak), Pro Apparel Team Sarawak, Giant Team, Ghost Speed Cycling Team, Master Piece Cycling Team, Tugau Cycling Team, Buceros WDT, GRBCC and 58 Cycling Group.
“Registration will be held on August 30, and a welcoming dinner will be held on the same day. On August 31, a run ride will be held from Betong Stadium to RTC Layar, as well as seven criterium categories. The next day, the road race will be staged, and 8 categories will be competed,” shared the deputy minister.
A total of RM51,260 in prize money will be up for grabs this year, and sports lovers can enjoy a plethora of side activities happening alongside the cycling challenge, including fun rides, concerts, wall climbing, folk games, sales booth and more!
