‘Getting to know the Bagatan’ programme highlights tribe’s cultural heritage

KAPIT, 2 March 2026: A programme aimed at getting to know the Bagatan tribe was held at Rumah Philip in Nanga Merit on February 28, and was officiated by the Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
The ‘Kenali Budaya dan Adat Resam Etnik Bagatan’ programme was organised by the Sarawak Entrepreneurs Association in collaboration with the local community in Kapit, to promote appreciation of the Bagatan ethnic community’s cultural heritage and customs. Meanwhile, the programme also focused on the development of local handicrafts and heritage-based entrepreneurship, which will allow the Bagatan’s unique culture to serve as an economic resource. The implementation of the programme is supported by the Facilitation Fund for Heritage and Arts.

The Bagatan are one of Sarawak’s 34 recognised ethnic groups, with a population of less than 10,000 people. Unique in their customs, language, oral history, intangible heritage and traditional practices, the Bagatan resides in 18 longhouses located in the Rajang, Anap (Bintulu) and Penyarai (Tatau).
The programme was also attended by MTCP’s Heritage and Creative Industry Division Head, Dr. Elena Chai, Kapit Resident representative, Elvis Didit, Kapit District Council Chairman, Andy Lawrence, Chairman of the Kapit District Council, Penghulu Esik, Sarawak Entrepreneurs Association Secretary, Cecilia Lagak as well as community leaders, longhouse chiefs, entrepreneurs and local residents.
