BVT and SRDC exchange MoU to advance bioeconomy and biotechnology roadmap
KUCHING, 10 September 2026: BioVerde Technologies Sdn Bhd and the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier today during the Sarawak SHInE International Conference 2026, marking the beginning of a strategic collaboration to support the development of the Sarawak Bioeconomy Roadmap 2026-2035.
The MoU exchange was represented by BVT CEO, Ts. Hazwan Razak and General Manager of SRDC, Ts. Dr. Peter Morin Nissom, and witnessed by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg at Imperial Hotel Kuching.
The collaboration not only reflects both organisations’ shared commitment to strengthening Sarawak’s bioeconomy ecosystem, but also support the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak’s (MEITD) broader efforts in strengthening the state’s research and innovation ecosystem.
Under the collaboration, BVT and SRDC will bring together their respective expertise, resources and networks to develop a roadmap that will set out the vision, strategic priorities and key opportunities for Sarawak’s bioeconomy over the next decade. The collaboration brings together SRDC’s role in advancing research, development and innovation in Sarawak with BVT’s focus on translating bio-based research, technologies and intellectual property into commercially viable products and services, while supporting the development of Sarawak’s bioindustry.
“Sarawak has significant strengths in biodiversity, research and innovation, and BVT is mandated to drive the commercialisation of bio-based innovations and support the development of Sarawak’s bioindustry,” said Ts. Hazwan Razak in a press statement, adding that the roadmap represents an important opportunity to connect Sarawak’s biodiversity and research strengths more systematically with industry, investment and commercialisation.
“Through this roadmap, we will work with SRDC and stakeholders to strengthen pathways from research to market, including through the upcoming Sarawak BioIndustrial Park and translate our strengths into commercial and socio-economic value for Sarawak,” he continued.
“Sarawak has built strong capabilities in research and innovation, and the opportunity now is to better connect these strengths with our economic priorities. This roadmap will help us identify where Sarawak has the greatest potential, strengthen collaboration across the research and innovation ecosystem, and create clearer pathways from scientific discovery to application. Working with BVT and our stakeholders, we want to build a bioeconomy that is driven by our own strengths and capable of creating new industries and long-term value for Sarawak,” said Ts. Dr. Peter Morin Nissom in the same press statement.
Following the MOU exchange, BVT and SRDC will commence the roadmap development with a stakeholder roundtable discussion on 11 September 2026. The session will provide a platform for stakeholders to share perspectives, identify priority areas and contribute towards shaping a practical and future-ready roadmap for Sarawak.
The development of the roadmap will involve research and analysis, further stakeholder consultations, workshops and review sessions, with a focus on aligning Sarawak’s research capabilities and biodiversity strengths with industry needs, investment opportunities, technology development and pathways to commercialisation.
Beyond the roadmap, the MOU establishes a broader platform for collaboration between BVT and SRDC, including identifying intellectual property, research outcomes, technologies and innovations with commercial potential and exploring pathways to bring promising innovations closer to market.
Through the collaboration, BVT and SRDC aim to strengthen the connections between research, innovation, commercialisation and industry development, contributing towards a more coordinated and commercially driven bioeconomy ecosystem for Sarawak.
