KUCHING, 12 September 2025: AirAsia today relaunched two direct routes to Pontianak, Indonesia after a 5-year absence, further connecting the province of West Kalimantan with the Malaysian cities of Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, reinforcing its commitment to improving regional connectivity and shared economic growth.
Flight AK1782 from Pontianak, Indonesia arrived at the Kuching International Airport at noon today with a celebratory water cannon, and arriving guests were treated to goodies from AirAsia, Tourism Malaysia and more.
Also present to greet them was the Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, along with the CEO of AirAsia Malaysia, Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra and CEO of Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), Sharzede Salleh Askor, together with representatives from Malaysia Airports, government departments and key private hospitals in Kuching.

“I commend AirAsia for launching this new route, which benefits not only Sarawak but also Malaysia and our neighbours. With Sarawak on track to achieve 5 million visitor arrivals this year and tourism receipts exceeding RM1 billion monthly, this new route will further support our efforts to attract more travellers, which is in line with our vision of making Sarawak a regional hub for creative industry and performing arts,” said Datuk Snowdan during today’s event.
The Pontianak-Kuching route was offered by AirAsia since 2017, but due to the retraction of international status for the Supadio Airport and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, operations stopped in March 2020. These flights by AirAsia marks the first international services at Supadio Airport following the reinstatement of its international status in June 2025.
Flights between Kuching and Pontianak will resume twice daily, while flights between Kuala Lumpur and Pontianak will resume 4 times a week – on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
