A Taste of Macao: From Taipa's Food Streets to Cotai's City Lights

From local food discoveries and iconic Portuguese egg tarts to immersive art experiences, refined Chinese cuisine and a dazzling open-top bus tour, discover a different side of Macao through its flavours, creativity and vibrant cityscape.

Macao is a destination where cultures, flavours and experiences come together in unexpected ways. While the city is widely recognised for its spectacular resorts and entertainment, there is another side waiting to be explored — from the character-filled streets of Taipa to the artistic attractions of Cotai and the city lights that illuminate the night.

Our journey began with a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Macao with AirAsia, marking the start of a familiarisation trip to discover what this vibrant destination has to offer. With a full day of food, art and entertainment ahead, we began by exploring one of the city's inviting neighbourhoods: Taipa.

A Taste of Taipa: Local Flavours and Portuguese Egg Tarts

Exploring Taipa offered a glimpse into Macao's everyday charm, where food spots, cafés and local businesses create an inviting atmosphere for visitors. It was the perfect place to begin discovering the destination through its culinary offerings.

Our food trail started with an orange Americano, a refreshing twist on the usual coffee that paired citrus notes with the bold taste of coffee. For something more substantial, we tried tomato chicken baked rice, a comforting dish packed with savoury flavours, followed by Lao Day Offal Beef, adding another stop to our culinary exploration.

One thing quickly became apparent: Macao's Chinese Muslim Friendly food is seriously good. The flavours were satisfying, and every meal offered another reason to look forward to the next.

No food trail would feel complete without trying Macao's famous Portuguese egg tarts. We stopped at Lord Stow's Bakery, known for its signature pastries featuring flaky crusts and smooth custard topped with a beautifully caramelised surface. With their Portuguese-inspired heritage, these treats have become one of Macao's most recognisable culinary icons.

From coffee and savoury dishes to a much-loved pastry, Taipa gave us a delicious introduction to the city's food scene.

Art and Imagination at MGM COTAI

From Taipa's food stops, we headed to MGM COTAI, where the experience shifted from neighbourhood charm to contemporary architecture, artistic installations and immersive entertainment.

The resort offers more than luxury hospitality, with striking interiors and art-focused spaces that bring creativity into the visitor experience.

One of the highlights was the Odyssey show, which introduced a whimsical world of imaginative visuals and charming characters. Among the most memorable were the adorable ladybirds, whose playful appearance added a delightful touch to the experience.

It was a lighter, more enchanting side of Macao's entertainment scene, demonstrating how art, design and storytelling can come together to create memorable moments for visitors of all ages.

An Evening of Cantonese Excellence at Imperial Court

As evening approached, we made our way to Imperial Court at MGM Macau, recognised in the MICHELIN Guide's Bib Gourmand selection, for a memorable Chinese dining experience.

The meal began with an appetiser combination featuring wok-fried Wagyu beef cubes with peppers and peppercorn, crispy shrimp with seaweed flakes on toast, and tossed Mexican jellyfish with celtuce. The Wagyu stood out for its tender texture and rich flavour, complemented by a pleasant peppery kick.

Wok-fried Hokkaido scallops with termite mushrooms and fresh yellow fungus brought delicate seafood flavours to the table, while the crispy roasted free-range chicken offered a satisfying contrast of crisp skin and succulent meat.

One of the highlights was the braised rice with abalones and diced roasted goose, a rich and savoury dish that brought together premium ingredients in a comforting yet indulgent combination. Sweetened lotus seed soup and pistachio glutinous rice cake rounded off the meal on a gentle, sweet note.

From Taipa's casual food discoveries to the refined Cantonese dishes at Imperial Court, the experience reinforced just how rewarding Macao can be for food lovers.

Macao After Dark: The Open-Top Bus Experience

To round off the day, we climbed aboard an open-top sightseeing bus and set off to discover Macao from a different perspective.

With the evening breeze in the air and illuminated buildings lighting up the skyline, the ride offered a relaxed way to take in the city's atmosphere. The dazzling resorts and vibrant streets created a spectacular backdrop as Macao came alive after dark.

There is something special about seeing a city from an open-top bus. Instead of rushing between attractions, visitors can sit back, enjoy the surroundings and appreciate the energy of the destination.

After a day filled with food discoveries, artistic experiences and entertainment, it was the perfect way to end the outing. The cool evening air, city lights and constantly changing views made the ride one of the most enjoyable highlights of the day.

Discovering a Different Side of Macao

From the flavours of Taipa to the creative experiences at MGM COTAI, an exceptional Chinese dinner at Imperial Court and the illuminated cityscape after dark, this journey offered a glimpse of Macao's diverse appeal.

Beyond its famous resorts, Macao invites visitors to discover its culinary heritage, explore its creative attractions and experience the city at their own pace.

For food lovers, in particular, the destination offers a rewarding journey between local favourites and sophisticated dining experiences. Add its artistic attractions and lively night-time scenery, and there is always something new to discover.

Sometimes, the most memorable way to get to know a place is simply to explore its streets, try its local favourites, enjoy a memorable meal and let the journey unfold one experience at a time.
