365-day countdown to the 2027 SEA Games begins!
KUCHING, 19 September 2026: Yesterday evening, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, through the Sarawak LOC Secretariat, hosted Sarawak Cluster’s One-Year Countdown to SEA Games 2027 at tHe Spring Kuching, building on the excitement for the biennial games, which is set to take place from September 18 to 29, 2027 in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor and Sarawak.
The official event, which was launched by Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, is aimed at encouraging local community engagement and support for the upcoming SEA Games, as well as intensifying promotional and publicity campaigns at both national and international levels.
“For Sarawak, this is more than just the countdown to a major sporting event. It represents our readiness, our commitment and most importantly, our collective responsibility to ensure that Sarawak plays its part in delivering a successful andmemorable SEA Games,” said Deputy State Secretary and Chairman of the Sarawak LOC Secretariat, Datu Hii Chang Kee in his welcoming speech. “Hosting the SEA Games is a great honour. It is also an opportunity for us to showcase Sarawak — our people, our facilities, our culture and our renowned hospitality — to athletes, officials and visitors from across Southeast Asia.”
“From the biennial Sukan Sarawak (SUKSAR) to Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) 2024, the Borneo Games 2025, and various national and international sporting events, each experience has helped us build stronger expertise, better facilities and greater confidence in delivering large-scale sporting competitions,” said Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim in his officiating speech. “These experiences have prepared us for greater responsibilities. Today, Sarawak is once again being entrusted to play an important role on an even bigger stage — co-hosting the 34th SEA Games Malaysia 2027.”
In addition to the celebration in Sarawak, similar events are also being held in Kuala Lumpur and the other 2 cluster states Penang and Johor simultaneously, and is expected to generate greater momentum for the celebration and promotional efforts. The event also saw the launching of the official SEA Games 2027 (Sarawak Cluster) website, which will serve as a comprehensive platform for results and information on SEA Games 2027.
The 34th SEA Games will feature 43 sports. Sarawak will be hosting 18 of them - aquatics, weightlifting, basketball, e-sports, golf, lawn bowls, archery, shooting, Muay Thai, pétanque, squash, tenpin bowling, tennis, taekwondo, wushu, cricket, gymnastics, and dance sport, as well as the opening ceremony at the Sarawak Stadium.
Kuala Lumpur will be hosting badminton, cycling, netball, volleyball, equestrian, hockey, ice skating, karate, fencing, athletics, pencak silat, rugby, water skiing, sailing, teqball, padel, ice hockey, and kabaddi, in addition to the closing ceremony. 6 sports will be hosted in Penang, namely snooker/billiards, judo, sepak takraw, boxing, table tennis, and floorball, while Johor will be hosting football.
“We now have one year ahead of us. These next twelve months will be critical. It is the period when our plans must translate into action, and our preparation must translate into readiness,” concluded the minister.
Also present at yesterday's event, Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (Entrepreneur Development), Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Malaysia SEA Games 2027 Organizing Secretariat (MASOC), Datuk Abdul Rashid Yaakub, Chef de Mission for SEA Games Malaysia, Azizul Annuar Adenan,MYSED Permanent Secretary, Dzulkornain Masron and MYSED Deputy Permanent Secretary, Nancy Jolhi.
