Kids of today are growing up with smartphones, tablets, TikTok, Instagram, VR games and whatnot. Toys and activities both in and outside of the house are still relevant but can’t quite compete with the almighty smart devices. Back then, about 20 or 30 years ago, the much younger us had plenty of things to get excited about that were very different from what kids of today are into. Let’s take a look at some of the popular things from the past that we were all so obsessed about and see if you can remember them:
VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) & VHS tapes
These was all the rage in the 1980s although VCRs were first introduced in the 1960. The revolutionary device allowed us to record our favourite television programmes on blank VHS tapes, giving us this sense of satisfaction of owning copies of our favourite TV shows on our media shelf.
This also led to movies being made available to purchase in VHS format. But the most nostalgic of all are the VHS rental shops that allowed us to rent our favourite TV shows and movies, with thousands of titles offered from the hottest sci-fi flicks to the latest wrestling episodes!
Forget fancy bubble blowers. Kids back then had hours of endless fun blowing bubblegum-type bubbles from “blue” squeezed out of a small tin tube, using a small plastic straw. The strong-smelling substance is very elastic, allowing you to blow big bubbles with little worry that they would pop so easily. They’re still available today, but no longer as popular as it was back then.
Tora & Ding Dang
Any 80’s and 90’s kids will know these. Tora and Ding Dang were a huge hit back in the 80’s and 90’s, especially because of the fantastic prizes you get in these boxes of chocolate snacks, which were honestly just “okay” tasting. There were all sorts of new toys to look forward to every time, from miniature robots to fun flying contraptions. Ahhh… the memories.
Book of Lyrics
Literally most if not all teenagers were into this. Kids in the 80’s and 90’s would buy a thick notebook and fill it up with lyrics to their favourite songs! And that wasn’t all… they used to accompany those lyrics with cutouts of the artistes those lyrics belonged to, which they took from entertainment magazines. Nothing gave teens back in those days greater joy than to show off their book of lyrics to their friends.
Before there were MP3s, Spotify or even CDs, there were cassette tapes! These analogue tapes encased in a plastic shell were the best things ever! In fact, cassettes are even more legendary in status than today’s modern formats. The best memories of cassette tapes include winding them back or forth using a pencil or a pen when you don’t have a cassette player or a Walkman around to do the job for you. Kids back in those days used to take unused cassette tapes or buy blank ones and used them to record their favourite songs off the radio, especially during song dedication segments. Some recorders allowed you to record your voice and create your own “radio show” using your collection of songs on tapes. It was the awesomest thing ever! Unfortunately like most things from the past, cassette tapes fell out of fashion with the advent of iPods and other smart devices, as well as music streaming services like Spotify, Tidal, Deezer and Apple Music.
So, what are some of the things from the past that still hold a special place in your heart?
