September 27-October 1, 2017
Bintulu Old Airport, Bintulu

Come Sept 27, the skies above Bintulu’s old airport will be swarming with thousands of kites in their most glorious hues and forms. So it will be over the next few days until Oct 1 at the Borneo International Kite Festival, Bintulu’s biggest tourism event that attracts thousands of local and international visitors to the town every year.

Held out on the plains of the old Bintulu airport, the event sees the largest gathering of kite enthusiasts in one place here in Sarawak. A number of them are professional kite flyers that come with their respective teams. They will be competing in various kiteflying events held at the festival. These will be something very interesting to see, especially as some of these teams can perform some truly impressive mid-air kite formations.

On the ground, visitors can take part in workshops conducted by professional kite flyers and kite makers. Get to know more about kites, get invaluable tips from the pros and even learn how to make your very own kite. Also grab the opportunity to see Malaysia’s famous giant kites called wau, the most famous being Wau Bulan.

The festival is a great way for families and friends to spend their free time, and maybe join in the fun and fly their own kite.

Visitors may also browse through the tents set up at the venue, where food and drinks as well as clothing, handicrafts and souvenirs will be sold. Nightly entertainment and activities such as colouring competition etc. make it even more worthwhile to visit the festival.

Borneo International Kite Festival is organised by Bintulu Development Authority, along with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture, Youth & Sports Sarawak, Bintulu Resident Office, Public Works Department, Department of Agriculture Sarawak, Department of Civil Aviation, Immigration Department of Malaysia, Royal Malaysian Customs Department, SEDC, Bintulu Port Authority, Petronas and Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd.
