SarawakInternational Dragon Boat Regatta 2017 November 10-12 Kuching Waterfront

Yes the annual affair that sees international teams of dragon boat racers paddling their way to victory is making its comeback on Nov 10 this year. It will be held over three days, ending Nov 12 at the scenic Kuching Waterfront, one of Kuching City’s chief tourist attractions.

The Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta 2017 is organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak with technical support by Harlie Venture (Malaysia). The event is affiliated by the International Dragon Boat Federation and supported by Sarawak Rivers Board, Kuching North City Commission as well as the Marine Operations Force of the Royal Malaysian Police. It is held along a 400-metre stretch along the Sarawak River. Boat racers will be surrounded by views of modern-day Kuching on one side and the historical Astana, Fort Margherita as well as the imposing State Legislative building on the other side. Thousands of spectators are expected to throng the venue to catch all the action and cheer for their favourite teams.

Organised in conjunction with the Kuching Waterfront Festival, the race was adopted from Chinese culture and implemented in Sarawak since 1872. The aim of having the regatta here has always been to encourage racial harmony among the people of Sarawak and using that to inspire the rest of the world. Today, it draws international interest and has become a permanent fixture in the State’s tourism calendar of events.

Besides the race, which is divided into seven categories: International Men’s Team 12’s, International Men’s Team 20’s, International Mix 12’s, International Mix 20’s, Sarawak Closed Race 20’s (Men only), Sarawak Closed Race 12’s (Men only) and International Junior Under 23 Open 12’s, visitors can also enjoy a stroll along the Waterfront Bazaar to discover delightful local crafts and cuisines.
