Project to enhance education of Penan kids in Long Seridan

Sarawak’s pride, 19-year-old Larissa Ping Liew, recently crowned Miss World Malaysia, recenlty spearheaded the “Indigenous Digital Outreach Programme” together with Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), and The Champions Kuching from Oct 18-23 in Long Seridan, Marudi.

This pilot project aims to empower the Penan Youth of SK Long Seridan through the use of digital technology, motivating them to go further in education. The programme saw the outreach team facilitating the setup of a computer lab which would serve as a micro digital hub for the school, restocking the school library, and replacing some of the ceiling fans and lights in the school. The team also received support from Build For Tomorrow, which helped to install solar powered street lights at the nearby Penan Settlement.

In line with the Miss World campaign for “Beauty with a Purpose”, Larissa aims to embody the vision of having better education for indigenous folks by inspiring the Orang Ulu youth to take interest in their education and develop themselves as individuals. Having occasionally frequented her village growing up, she was made aware of the education gap that the Orang Ulu youth face in the rural areas of Sarawak. She aspires to bring about a positive impact in the lives of the indigenous communities through education.

The outreach was the first of many to come for Larissa, who looks to return to Long Seridan and run this programme in other rural settlements as well, after the Miss World Finals on Dec 8 2018, in Sanya, China.

Supporting partners for this outreach programme include Yayasan Sarawak, Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS), Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, PC Image, HAUS KCH, and Water Genesis Sdn Bhd. Several honourable mentions include Prof. Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Dato Isaac Lugun, the Ngu family, Goh Leng Yu, Tan Keng Yew, Bong Ah Loi, Kelvin Chan, Jayne Tan, who have all generously contributed to this cause.
