From 11 pioneer officers since the beginning of its operation on 2nd January 2000 to 183 staff, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak has grown tremendously for the past 20 years.
Recently on Jan 4th, the Library just held its Chairman’s Annual Address and Appreciation as a toast to commemorating to the lengthy milestone.
Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence
Kicking of its 20th anniversary was the annual tree planting session within Pustaka’s park following after the morning’s aerobic session. This time, 20 species of young plants species were planted around the areas of Taman Rama-Rama and Laman Santai as a mark of turning 20. Planted species were violet, peach, lily, lavender, sunflower and many more.

That morning also saw the launches of Beatspace @ Pustaka and Aesthetic Space by Pustaka’s Board of Management Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr.) Haji Hamid Bugo. Created on March 22nd 2019, BeatSpace @ Pustaka is an open learning space that encourages the public’s involvement in musical arts by providing access to music equipments such as drums, guitar and piano. Meanwhile, Aesthetic Space @ Pustaka is a venue for individuals to learn about anything that is related to visual arts, creativity and imagination.

The 20th anniversary was also enlivened by a two-day Open Day Carnival on Jan 4-5, with exciting activities of Book Swap, Story Telling, Games, Quizzes and Exhibition, just to name a few. Also introduced was the Library’s Le Tour De Park (Community Garden), a trail of several gardens along Pustaka’s jogging track with provided facilities. Among the gardens are Swing Garden, Sensory Garden and Community Garden.

Chairman’s Annual Address
Reminiscing back on the past 20 years journey, Pustaka’s Chairman said the library has come a long way and evolved tremendously. It is no more just a place of keeping and borrowing books, but has evolved into a place for life-long learners to seek and exchange of knowledge which help improve their quality of life.
According to him, the success of Pustaka are contributed by three factors which are its clear vision and definitive direction, the willingness to learn amongst the staff including the board members, and strategic partnerships and collaborations withvarious stakeholders notably government agencies, NGOs, private sectors and the local communities.

Also speaking during Chairman’s Annual Address, Pustaka’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. Rashidah Bolhasan said that Pustaka’s continuous success can only be determined by ensuring its current services are met with the current needs of people. This is done through getting feedbacks from its users during its Customer’s Day, which is held simultaneously with the event. This is Pustaka’s way of benchmarking, andguaranteeing that each population in Sarawak has the right access to knowledge which can improve their quality of life.
Indeed, Pustaka has proven itself as a leader of information knowledge in the region, bagging home 4 awards in the past year…

More to Come for Sarawakians
With the guidance of the Pustaka’s board members and under the CEO’s steer, the 183 dedicated staff of Pustaka willcontinue to serve Sarawakians in the pursuit of becoming a knowledge and information-based society. Looking forward, Pustaka is also prepared to be the champion in providing free and easily accessible information resources, integrating its services with Digital Economy, and embarking on its DekadMembaca 2021-2030 reading initiative.

In addition to Kuching and Miri campuses, the long-awaited Sibu campus will be opened in April 2020, serving Sarawak’s central region. Also, Sarawak State Archives Building is expected to kick off in 2020 and will become the best-equipped archives facility in the region, focussing on both print and digital archives.
Any of us too, would have spent some time in Pustaka, whether it is meeting friends, exercising or doing some research. It is in fact, the one-stop knowledge, cultural and recreational centre for all folks of life. Kudos to Pustaka for successfully being the fountain of knowledge and information for the past 20 years, and more to come!
